Labradorite – Irina Blue / Extra Blue Ukraine
A premium anorthosite with phenomenal blue labradorescence — an optical effect caused by the diffraction of light on the rock’s thin-layered crystalline structures. Irina Blue / Extra Blue Ukraine stands in a category of its own. A black base without a single outward embellishment. Yet at a certain angle to the light source the entire surface flares bright blue: large labradorite crystals scatter the light in a characteristic iridescence — an effect that shifts with every step the viewer takes. This natural phenomenon cannot be reproduced by any man-made material.
The intensity of the iridescence depends on block quality: in the Extra Blue variety the blue component covers a larger area and burns brighter — and it is this variety that is most highly prized in memorial and prestige architectural projects. Polishing makes the black background absolute and deep, and the mirror surface pushes the blue flashes brighter still. Flamed, the background goes dark grey and the iridescence quietens — trading theatre for an earthier, more material presence that loses none of its force.
A density of 2,800 kg/m³, water absorption of 0.40% and a compressive strength of 150 MPa ensure reliability in monumental structures. Indispensable for memorial monuments, prestige facades, countertops and architectural accents where natural spectacle is the central design value.
